Job Description

Position Summary
Reporting to the directly to the CFO but working closely with the Finance Director (FD) for training purposes, the Controller of this non-profit will be responsible for oversight of all finance, accounting, and reporting activities. The Controller will work closely with program managers to understand accounting policies, procedures and understanding financial reports.

The Controller will lead day-to-day finance operations for an operating budget of over $100 million and supervise 16 staff members including functional responsibility over accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and grants financial administration. The Controller will ensure the systems and procedures in place to support effective program operations and to produce flawless audits. The Controller will work closely with program leaders and their staffs, not only to educate them regarding finance and accounting procedures but also to explore how the finance function can support program operations.

In addition, the Controller will partner with the FD, CFO, senior leadership, and the human resources (HR) and information technology (IT) staff to enhance and better integrate finance, HR, and IT functions.

Finance and Accounting Leadership

  • Oversee all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems ensuring compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and regulatory requirements;
  • Maintain internal controls and safeguards for receipts or revenue, costs, and program budgets and actual expenditures;
  • Coordinate all audit activity;
  • Consistently analyze financial data and present financial reports in a accurate and timely manner; clearly communicate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements; monitor progress and changes and keep senior leadership abreast of financial status;
  • Assist leadership in the annual budgeting and planning process; administer and review all financial plans and compare to actual results with a view to identify, explain, and correct variances as appropriate;
  • Oversee all financial, project/program and grants accounting; ensure that expenditures are consistently aligned with grant and program budgets throughout the grant/fund period; collate financial reporting materials for government, corporate, and foundation grants; and
  • Assist in organizational cash flow forecasting by working in partnership with the program managers/directors FD and CFO and continuously collaborate with program managers/directors to assess the financial efficacy of program operations and establish finance and administrative systems to support program operations.


  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related field;
  • CPA or CMA certification;
  • 10+ years of accounting/finance experience in public or industry, including 5+ years of Controller-level experience
  • Non-profit experience with detail level experience with the Federal Government Single Audit (SEFA)
  • Solid experience coordinating audit activities and managing reporting, budget development and analysis, accounts payable and receivable, general ledger, payroll, and accounting for investments;
  • A track record in grants management as it relates to compliance and reporting of government, corporate, and foundation grants is preferred but not required;
  • Technology savvy with experience selecting and overseeing software installations and managing relationships with software vendors; advanced knowledge of accounting and reporting software
  • intermediate Excel skills (i.e. pivot tables, vlookups, if statements)
  • Experience in effectively communicating key data, including presentations to senior management, and Board or other outside partners.

Sage Intacct
Hours: 40 - 45/week typical, extended hours at month/year end closes; have to be flexible when disaster relief projects pop up - extended hours for everyone at those times
FLEXIBLE work schedule: first 2 - 3 months in office, then hybrid.
