Vaco has a contract opportunity in Houston, TX for a Big Data Modeler. Qualified candidates must have the following to be considered:
  • Three years experience in Big Data modeling, data warehousing, SQL and metadata management
  • Three years of experience healthcare institution or industry
  • Three years experience in XML, VCF, FHIR standards
  • Three years experience in Big Data programming and business systems analysis preferably in the clinical, research and molecular domains

The Data Modeler is responsible for transforming complex business processes, structures, activities, and business rules and definitions into data architectures, models, diagrams, and documents for information technology solutions that meet customer needs and requirements.


  • Performs data modeling activities for projects.
  • Collaborate with team members, departmental staff, and institutional staff to elicit, analyze, and document customer data needs and requirements, and to understand their underlying business drivers.
  • Apply the principles and methods of data modeling to identify and define the scope and content of information domains of patient care, clinical operations, and research.
  • Formulate transactional, normalized, dimensional, and/or object-oriented data models of these domains as needed to meet customer needs and solve defined business problems.
  • These data models may encompass working with Big Data technologies (e.g. HDFS, HIVE, HBASE), Natural Language Processing (NLP), data warehousing, data science, metadata repositories and tools, data security, master data management including the use of standardized vocabularies, code sets, and ontologies, where appropriate.
  • All requirements gathering and data modeling activities shall follow established departmental processes and standards, including standardized documentation.
  • The data modeling activities involves working with relational data sources, semi-structured (e.g. XML), unstructured files, flat files, hierarchical structures as well.
  • May conduct peer reviews of BSAs' work and other data modelers' work to ensure standards and methods are followed consistently and to make recommendations when appropriate.
  • Perform data engineering, solution development and metadata support activities. May conduct data engineering activities such as converting source data into comprehensive Big Data tables and user views (e.g. HIVE views), following established departmental processes and standards, including standardized documentation. Incorporate quality assurance and risk mitigation activities into development efforts.
  • Use established standards, processes, and tools to manage data flow process diagrams, data models, business rules. May perform other solution development and metadata activities for ongoing development and support.


Education: Bachelor's degree.
Preferred Education: Master's Level Degree

Experience: Five years of data modeling experience. May substitute require education degree with additional years of equivalent experience on a one to one basis or completed years of college on a one to one basis.
