Job Description

A Category Manager is expected to be the entrepreneurial expert for specific categories that they are assigned to manage; which are organized into a Department or Departments. This knowledge should include but not be limited to; market trends, item costing, competitive landscape, product specifications, product issues, and logistical requirements. A Category Manager is expected to use this knowledge to manage and consistently improve the financial performance of their assigned department or departments; which are specifically measured by Top Line Sales, Gross Margin Dollar production, and Inventory Productivity such as Turn and GMROI (Gross Margin Return on Investment).

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Partner with intra company resources such as Planning, Allocations, Product Sourcing, Space Management, Advertising, Supply Chain, and Store Operations to achieve goals.
  • Professionally negotiate with external vendors
  • Develop, present, execute, measure, and report on specific strategies designed to increase business while maximizing profitability and customer satisfaction.
  • Develop, present, execute, and measure department specific
    • Promotional strategies
    • Item exit strategies
    • Planograms
    • Display Pans
  • Continuously search for, identify, and present growth opportunities and risks associated to the business to leadership with contingency plans.
  • Ensure the company's product presentation is current, and in line with the market.
  • Travel requirements of this position include; local, domestic and international travel to meet with vendors, attend tradeshows and review marketplace conditions

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Minimum of 3 to 5 years of actual retail buying or a combination of retail experience, which may include Store Management
  • Keen understanding of the dynamics of negotiating product and interpersonal knowledge of how to achieve department goals
  • Ability to not only develop and work product into the domestic market, but develop potential international business via sourcing and traveling to foreign markets
  • Ability to learn and stay on top of product categories and industry information quickly
  • Ability to analyze and interpret budget, sales, market and consumer data to select products and measure performance

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree preferably in Merchandising, Marketing or Business
