Data Classification Analyst

Gatekeeper for assessing, recommending, and classifying the organization's data so stakeholders can ascertain data and use it to make strategic business decisions.


  • 1. OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT

    • Responsible for the design, implementation and ongoing operation of a company-wide Data Classification and Data Governance Program.
    • Responsible for data inventory, categorize and classify all electronic data that is processed or stored according to risk management techniques and practices and the data policies.
    • Review and analyze gaps in resources necessary to protect the data.
    • Assign data classification labels based on the data's potential impact level and ensure proper security controls are assigned to protect each piece of data.
    • Ensure that data shared between departments is consistently classified and protected.
    • Responsible for data collected, created, processed and shared is appropriately secured including purging.
    • Administer training and ensuring personnel are well informed of regulations.
    • Provide insight to problems and implement corrective actions.
    • Strategize and conduct meetings and communicate data classification scheme.



  • 2. DATA STRUCTURE & ADMINISTRATION


    • Support governance and strategic planning activities to establish the Data Protection program to include implementing, documenting, managing, and ensuring data classification standards, guidelines and best practices are adhered to.
    • Manage and administer all facets of data classification.
    • Data structures complies with Data Classification, Data Privacy and all Information Technology security policies and procedures.
    • Analyze and act as a catalyst for recommending policies and/or tools to protect data and information to ensure alignment to current laws, policies, and published guidelines including NIST, GDPR, and CCPA guidelines.
    • Liaise with the IT teams to develop and map control structures to ensure the accuracy and quality of data through all upstream and downstream data channels.
    • Participate in projects that involve any upstream or downstream data flows and processes and make recommendations for streamlining functions and processes.
    • Coordinate the resolution of data integrity gaps by working with department owners.
    • Work with IT partners to gather and understand functional requirements, develop plans, queries and provide reports to safeguard data security and integrity.
    • Support investigations involving unauthorized data access and unauthorized data disclosure

  • 3. CLIENT MANAGEMENT


    • Provide project updates and technical specifications to clients and stakeholders.


  • 4. TRAINING & DEVELOPMENT

    • Provide insight with departments to design and build solutions as a subject matter expert in data classification.
    • Partner with management teams to ensure data governess expectations are not only met but exceeded.
    • Perform outreach and training to employees and/or clients.

    5. ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Recommend process improvements.
    • Perform other related duties as required and assigned.

    KNOWLEDGE, ABILITY AND SKILLS:

    • Knowledge of data classification standards and requirements.
    • Logistics experience a plus.
    • Familiarity with current data classification guidelines and processes.
    • Demonstrated experience with process diagramming, compiling metrics and benchmarking, requirements gathering, performing market research and risk analysis, assessing and documenting policy and providing program support.
    • Ability to present facts and recommendations effectively in oral and written form.
    • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with other management staff, employees, and general public.
    • Advanced knowledge in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Visio and Excel.
    • Strong in Microsoft SQL Server, data mapping and data profiling skills.
    • Excellent communication, problem-solving, organizational and analytical skills are required.
    • Ability to interpret government regulations.

    EDUCATION, TRAINING AND WORK EXPERIENCE:

    • Bachelor's Degree (or Associates) and five + years' experience in a related field.
    • 2 - 5 Five + years' hands on experience in data classification.
    • Data Certifications a plus (analytics, data sciences, Azure, and/or professional).
    • Experience in querying SQL databases.
