Job Overview

Team leader who directs, coordinates, and evaluates activities of the payroll team engaged in collecting and recording hours of work, processing time records, compiling payroll statistics, maintaining payroll control records, processing garnishments, processing taxes and calculating payroll while ensuring compliance with both policy and regulatory requirements. A valued member of the organizational leadership team who will interact with co-workers at all levels of the organization to further company goals. This position has direct supervision of the Payroll Manager and indirect supervision of the payroll team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversees the weekly processing and disbursement of multi-state payrolls, timely payroll tax filings, and reconciliation of general ledger accounts
  • Provides active leadership, advice and direction for the payroll team
  • Ensures that payroll is in compliance with federal and state laws and company policies
  • Ensures all payroll reports are prepared and maintained after each payroll cycle
  • Ensures the payment of all payroll liabilities are processed within established deadlines
  • Oversees the time keeping system ensuring proper updates and maintenance are completed
  • Ensures journal entries are prepared and submitted to the Accounting department within established deadlines
  • Ensures all payroll general ledger accounts are reconciled, reviewed and approved on a period basis
  • Coordinates electronic W-2 processing each calendar year; ensure the timely completion of all payroll tax reporting requirements (quarterly/annual returns) and the issuance of W-2s
  • Represents Payroll in leadership meetings
  • Actively identifies potential issues and communicates alternatives/solutions to leadership and team members in a timely manner
  • Oversees payroll audits
  • Stays abreast on current on payroll laws, regulations, and taxation


  • Bachelor's degree in Business or Accounting
  • Minimum of seven (7) years of Payroll experience, five (5) years leading the Payroll Department
  • Certified Payroll Professional certification desired
  • Proven strategic success in a multi-state and/or multi-legal entity payroll environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in order to interact with all levels of management, employees and clients (internal and external)
  • Ability to manage and lead staff to excellent performance
  • Ability to make judgments concerning the interpretation of policies and procedures that will affect the tenure of employees
  • Ability to analyze financial information for problem solving ideas, system recommendations, administrative efficiencies, etc. with minimal supervision
  • Organizational ability to maintain appropriate files, reports, etc., with minimal supervision.
  • Must have the flexibility to handle multiple projects/problems simultaneously
