Hardware Engineer

Main Job Function:

  • Design of Electrical Installation and Integration of various Thales and other supplier's subsystem products (i.e., Communication Based Train Control, Automatic Fare Collection, Public Address, Passenger Information, Power Distribution, Closed Circuit Television, Platform Screen Doors, Uninterruptible Power Supply, Data Communication, Axle Counters, Guideway Heating, Power Rail Heating, Switch Machines, etc.).
  • Define project installation requirements through review and analysis of customer technical specifications, subsystem technical and interface requirements and applicable codes and standards.
  • Estimate Engineering labor and material for bids and proposals for Installation effort.

Primary Job Responsibilities:

  • Lead and or participate in the hardware design process to ensure designs meet requirements and lead to an efficient installation and cutover.
  • Develop equipment outline drawings, cabling and termination schedules and schematics detailing equipment locations, grounding and installation details.
  • Develop power design including load and loss calculations to be in compliance with accepted industry standards.
  • Design drawings and bills of material for installation hardware (vehicle borne and wayside), fixtures and jigs.
  • Develop technical documentation required for design verification and installation testing.
  • Prepare and present design documentation, plans and concepts for both internal and external design reviews.
  • Support installation, testing and commissioning activities.
  • Prepare technical documentation needed to satisfy internal practices and processes and customer contract data requirements list.
  • Support site personnel with corrective and preventative actions in dealing with site installation issues.
  • Monitor site activities and act to prevent installation problems.
  • Develop comprehensive installation work scope documentation to solicit subcontractor pricing, evaluate pricing and negotiate technical terms.
  • Support First Article Installation Inspection to ensure that the manufacture and installation is correct.
  • Ensure that all changes to installation design are captured using the appropriate configuration management techniques.
  • Participate in Final Acceptance Inspection to ensure all milestone activities leading to substantial completion of the project have been successfully completed and delivered to customer and regulatory authorities.
  • Making efficient re-use of existing designs.
  • Demonstrating a good degree of initiative, and resourcefulness in solving problems.
  • Interpreting, identifying, and documentation of requirements such that customer needs are met within the budget and schedule constraints.
  • Ensuring both the safety and quality of hardware products while reducing the deployment cost of those products.
  • Comply with Health Safety Environment regulations and Site Safety Plans.

Skills:

Essential Job Skills and Requirements:

  • Knowledge of the following is preferred: Railway Signalling, Interlocking Principles, Vital Relay Logic, Switch Machine Applications, Signal Applications, Track Circuit Applications, Association of American Railroads communications & signal guidelines, American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-Way Association Manual practices, Cabling, Grounding techniques, Surge Protection, Electrical Engineering Principles, Power circuits design, Electronic circuits including Microprocessors, Telecommunications circuits.
  • Engineering tools: CAD system (AutoCad), 3D/Solid Modeling, IBM Rational DOORS, Multi-meter, Oscilloscope, Protocol Analyzers, Simulation tools.
  • General knowledge of system and hardware/software design, development, installation and testing.
  • Excellent communication skills.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in Electrical Installation Design.
  • Preferable: Previous Transit Industry experience and Railway Signalling System experience.
  • Must be able to speak & write English
  • Proficiency in Autocad
  • Able to draft drawings

Education:

Education

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology or equivalent combination of academic and work experience.
