Student Loan Underwriter

Job Description:

The selected candidate would be responsible for the timely and accurate underwriting of student loan applications and related documentation under the Ascent Funding Program, while maintaining conformance with established program guidelines and compliance with all applicable laws and regulations. The selected candidate will perform any functions within scope of authority and expertise to provide excellent service and responsiveness to customers, clients, vendors and co-workers.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Review loan applications for accuracy and compliance with Ascent Funding Program guidelines and all applicable laws and regulations.
  • Perform repayment capacity testing, including debt-to-income and/or payment-to-future-income calculations on student loan applications.
  • Review program enrollment / transcript information from students and/or schools to verify eligibility under certain loan programs.
  • Review and analyze special conditions and exception requests to determine the appropriate action.
  • Provide approval, denial and loan limit decisions to third-party originator processor for completion of loan processing and/or fulfillment of adverse action notification.
  • Review outcomes of applicants' financial literacy modules as part of the underwriting approval process.
  • Provide guidance and expertise to internal and external parties in relation to product specifications under the Ascent Funding Program.
  • Work closely with the Business Intelligence group to develop performance, throughput and exceptions reporting.

Basic Minimum Requirements:

  • BS or equivalent degree is required, Master's degree or beyond is highly desirable.
  • Minimum 3-5 years consumer loan underwriting experience, student loan experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of related state and federal consumer lending compliance regulations.
  • Ability to calculate interest, and percentages; balance accounts; add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals; locate routine mathematical errors; compute rate, ratio and percent.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.
  • Strong organizational skills, with a high level of attention to details.
  • Must be an effective communicator, both orally and written.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in cross-functional teams.
  • Must be competent in the use of MS Excel.
