Core Responsibilities:
Month-End Close & Financial Reporting
- Own the monthly close process, including schedule, deliverables, and reconciliation discipline
- Ensure accurate and timely financial statements (P&L, balance sheet, cash flow)
- Maintain a clean and well-supported general ledger with strong backup documentation (balance sheet schedules)
- Prepare monthly management reporting packages for CFO and management review
- Lead job cost and WIP reporting, ensuring accurate revenue recognition and margin reporting
- Partner with PMs/Operations to validate: percent complete, cost-to-complete, committed costs, pending change orders and margin impacts
- Identify and resolve WIP anomalies quickly and consistently
- Own labor wage rate development and maintenance for job costing accuracy (base wages, burden, fringes, taxes, insurance allocations, and any standard labor rates used in project costing and WIP reporting).
- Drive detailed follow-through on AR aging, collections support, and billing accuracy
- Ensure AP is processed accurately and timely, with clear cutoffs and clean aging
- Improve and maintain controls around check processing / clearing and cash visibility
- Strengthen internal controls and ensure compliance with accounting policies and requirements
- Support external partners (auditors, tax, lenders) by preparing clean schedules and support
- Maintain documentation supporting lender reporting and borrowing base requirements (as applicable)
- Provide day-to-day supervision and accountability for the Accounting and Payroll teams
- Lead accounting execution with a “close-first mindset”
- Ensure the accounting team follows consistent processes and deadlines
- Supervise payroll execution and controls, including timecard workflows, job/labor coding accuracy, payroll accruals, union benefits and reconciliation of payroll to the general ledger.
- Coach and develop staff through clear expectations and accountability (hands-on leadership)
Qualifications:
Required
- 5 years of progressive accounting experience, ideally with construction accounting exposure
- Prior Controller or Assistant Controller experience
- Strong command of: job costing WIP mechanics, month-end close, reconciliations and internal controls
- High proficiency in Excel
- Ability to operate with urgency, detail, and ownership
- Experience with Sage, Procore, or similar construction systems (Plexxis is a plus)
- CPA/CMA a plus, not required
