Senior Accountant, Financial Reporting POST NUMBER: 470952
Our client is looking for a strong Senior Accountant for an 18-month contract opportunity. Reporting to the Director, Technical Accounting and Financial Reporting, the Senior Accountant, Financial Reporting, will play a key role in the monthly and quarterly close processes as well as oversee the preparation of quarterly and annual financial statements and related disclosures.
About the Opportunity
Financial Reporting
- Involved in the monthly and quarterly close process including preparation and review of journal entries.
- Involved in IFRS financial statement preparation and review including responsibility for certain quarterly and annual disclosures for the financial statements and MD&A.
- Lead the evaluation of certain critical accounting estimates and underlying assumptions to ensure accuracy. Areas of focus include but are not limited to share-based compensation, long term debt and employee benefit obligations.
- Involvement in the preparation and review of a quarterly reporting template for the parent company.
- Manage account reconciliation process and review certain account reconciliations.
- Participate in the end-to-end quarterly and monthly close process ensuring all deliverables are completed on a timely basis.
- Monitor and ensure compliance with debt covenants, proactively assess potential issues and coordinate with internal and external stakeholders.
- Act as a key point of contact for external audits ensuring timely and accurate responses to auditors’ inquiries and facilitate efficient audit execution.
- Involved in GST/HST government tax audits, liaise with external tax auditors and support the annual GST/ HST return preparation process as required.
- Perform technical research and analysis on new transactions and changes in accounting standards as needed.
- Perform annual technical analyses including the goodwill impairment assessment.
- Participate in and lead certain aspects of the implementation of IFRS 18: Presentation and Disclosure in Financial Statements.
- Participation in internal audits including providing support for Sarbanes Oxley controls relating to financial reporting processes.
- Identify and recommend process improvements within areas of responsibility to maximize operational efficiency.
- Participate in special projects and respond to ad hoc requests and inquiries, as required.
- Supervise and mentor one direct report ensuring quality and consistency of work and fostering professional development.
- Provide peer support, guidance and cross-training to other teams members as necessary.
About You
- CPA (or equivalent or CPA in-progress) designation.
- At least 6 years of progressive experience in an accounting/finance department.
- Demonstrated ability to coach and mentor professional level accounting personnel in the completion of work, performance management, and career development.
- Public company reporting experience preferred.
- Insurance company or general financial services experience preferred.
- Knowledge of and experience with full cycle accounting including journal entries, account reconciliations and financial statement preparation is required.
- Demonstrated strong analytical and organizational skills.
- Strong project management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities with a sense of urgency and commitment to accuracy.
- Ability to work independently while providing support and integrating with the entire Controllership and Financial Planning & Analysis team when necessary.
- Strong communication (written and oral) and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrates a clear commitment to the highest standards of professional and personal conduct.
- Intermediate to Advanced Microsoft Excel skills are required.
