Halthom City, TX – onsite initially, hybrid potential after probationary period
Vaco has partnered with one of our private-equity clients to assist in identifying an Assistant Controller for one of their recently-acquired portcos here in the general Fort Worth area. This was a founder-owned operation that has experienced organic growth in the last several years due to their business model. Their goal is to professionalize the accounting department, put procedures in place and have someone dedicated to closing the books to free up the AVP to focus on higher-level items.
Compensation: $160-170K bonus
Day-to-Day
- Own and execute the monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes with a focus on accuracy and timeliness
- Prepare and review journal entries, account reconciliations, and supporting schedules
- Maintain the integrity of the general ledger and ensure compliance with U.S. GAAP
- Analyze financial results and investigate variances, providing clear insights to leadership
- Assist in the preparation of financial statements and management reporting packages
- Build, document, and continuously improve accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls
- Identify inefficiencies and implement process improvements to enhance scalability and accuracy
- Establish a disciplined close calendar and enforce accountability across departments
- Support system enhancements or implementations as needed
- Oversee day-to-day accounting functions including AP, AR, payroll, and cash management
- Ensure proper revenue recognition, job costing, and expense classification in a service-based environment
- Partner with operations to ensure accurate project/job-level financial tracking
- Prepare audit-ready schedules and documentation to support external audit processes
- Assist the CFO in coordinating with external auditors and ensuring timely completion of audit deliverables
- Maintain compliance with lender reporting requirements and internal controls
- Serve as a key partner to the CFO, taking ownership of tactical accounting responsibilities
- Collaborate with operations and other departments to improve financial visibility and discipline
- Potentially supervise and mentor junior accounting staff as the company grows
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance (CPA strongly preferred)
- 5–8 years of progressive accounting experience (public accounting and/or industry)
- Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP and financial reporting
- Experience in a private equity-backed or high-growth environment is highly preferred
- Proven ability to build and improve accounting processes in a hands-on capacity
- Strong attention to detail with the ability to operate both tactically and strategically
- Proficiency in accounting systems and Excel
