Job Title: Staff Accountant

Employment Type: Contract-to-Hire
 

Position Overview

Our nonprofit client is seeking a Staff Accountant to support day to day accounting operations and ensure accurate financial reporting. This role will assist with general ledger maintenance, reconciliations, month-end close, and compliance activities, while working closely with the finance team to support the organization’s mission and funding requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the month-end close process, including preparation of journal entries
  • Maintain and reconcile general ledger accounts, including bank and balance sheet reconciliations
  • Assist with accounts payable and accounts receivable processing as needed
  • Prepare and review supporting schedules for financial statements
  • Track and reconcile restricted and unrestricted funds
  • Assist with grant tracking, reporting, and compliance documentation
  • Support annual audit preparation and respond to auditor requests
  • Maintain accurate and organized financial records in accordance with nonprofit accounting standards
  • Assist with budget tracking and variance analysis
  • Collaborate with internal departments to ensure accurate financial coding and documentation
  • Perform other accounting and finance duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (or equivalent experience)
  • 2–4 years of accounting experience; nonprofit or fund accounting experience strongly preferred
  • Working knowledge of general ledger accounting and reconciliations
  • Experience with month-end close activities
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel
  • Experience with nonprofit accounting systems (MIP, Sage Intacct, NetSuite, or similar preferred)
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy
  • Ability to manage deadlines in a structured, compliance-driven environment
  • Professional communication skills and ability to handle confidential information

Nice to Have

  • Experience supporting grants, cost reports, or government-funded programs
  • Prior audit support experience
  • Familiarity with nonprofit financial reporting requirements
