Title: Payroll Administrator / HR Clerk
Pay: $27–$29/hr
Location: Newark, NJ
Duration: Long term contract to perm
Schedule: Monday–Friday, 9:00 AM–5:00 PM, fully onsite
Description:
An established community-focused nonprofit organization in Newark, NJ is seeking a Payroll Administrator / HR Clerk to join their team. This role will support a lean HR department and will be responsible for processing bi-weekly payroll, maintaining accurate payroll/HR records, and assisting with a variety of HR administrative tasks.
This is a great opportunity for someone with strong payroll experience who is detail-oriented, organized, deadline-driven, and comfortable handling confidential employee information.
Responsibilities:
- Process bi-weekly payroll accurately and on time for approximately 120–150 employees, including hourly and salaried staff
- Audit timekeeping records and payroll data for accuracy and compliance
- Process new hires, rehires, employee changes, deductions, time-off, terminations, and other updates in the payroll/HRIS system
- Resolve payroll discrepancies by collecting and analyzing information
- Assist employees with payroll/HRIS questions and self-service portal support
- Prepare and run payroll/HRIS reports related to earnings, taxes, deductions, benefits, and other employee data
- Maintain payroll compliance by following internal policies, procedures, and applicable laws
- Support HR administrative functions including filing, recordkeeping, background checks, references, and employee training setup
- Process unemployment claims, employment verifications, garnishments, audit requests, workers’ compensation inquiries, and other related requests
- Assist with HR projects and general administrative support as needed
- Maintain a high level of confidentiality with all payroll and HR information
- 3 years of payroll experience required
- Experience using payroll software required; ADP Workforce Now strongly preferred, but similar systems such as Paychex or Paylocity are also relevant
- Experience in a multi-department environment with hourly employees and variable rates preferred
- Some HR compliance or HR administrative experience preferred
- Strong Microsoft Office skills, especially Excel and Word
- Excellent attention to detail, organization, and follow-through
- Ability to meet deadlines and handle confidential information appropriately
- Strong communication and customer service skills
- High school diploma required; college degree or payroll certification preferred
