Our client, a mission-driven non-profit organization, is seeking an experienced Director of Finance & IT for a 6-month contract to lead the organization’s financial management, reporting, compliance, and technology functions. Reporting to the Executive Director and working closely with senior leadership and the Board, this role will provide strategic financial oversight while ensuring strong stewardship of public funding and organizational resources.
The successful candidate will oversee a small team across Finance and IT, ensuring the integrity of financial operations, regulatory compliance, funding accountability, and technology infrastructure. This individual will play a critical role in supporting organizational growth, operational excellence, and long-term sustainability.
About the Opportunity
Financial Leadership & Strategy:
- Lead all aspects of the organization’s finance function, including budgeting, forecasting, financial reporting, cash flow management, and long-term financial planning.
- Provide strategic financial guidance to the Executive Director, leadership team, and Board of Directors.
- Develop and monitor organizational budgets, identifying risks, opportunities, and recommendations to support decision-making.
- Present financial results, forecasts, and key performance indicators to senior leadership and Board committees.
- Oversee financial reporting and compliance requirements associated with provincial, municipal, and other government funding agreements.
- Ensure timely preparation and submission of funding reports, grant reconciliations, and supporting documentation.
- Maintain strong internal controls to ensure compliance with funder requirements, regulatory obligations, and organizational policies.
- Serve as the primary financial liaison with funding agencies, auditors, and external stakeholders.
- Oversee the full-cycle accounting function, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, bank reconciliations, and month-end close.
- Ensure accurate and timely preparation of financial statements in accordance with applicable accounting standards for not-for-profit organizations.
- Manage annual audit processes and coordinate external audit requirements.
- Monitor organizational cash flow, reserves, and investment activities.
- Lead, mentor, and develop a small team across Finance and IT functions.
- Establish priorities, allocate resources, and foster a collaborative, service-oriented culture.
- Support employee development through coaching, performance management, and succession planning.
- Information Technology Oversight
- Provide oversight of the organization’s IT operations, systems, vendors, and technology roadmap.
- Partner with internal stakeholders and external service providers to ensure reliable and secure technology infrastructure.
- Support technology initiatives that improve operational efficiency, reporting capabilities, cybersecurity, and organizational effectiveness.
- Oversee IT budgets, contracts, and vendor relationships.
- Support Board and Committee meetings through preparation of financial materials and presentations.
- Ensure appropriate financial policies, procedures, and risk management frameworks are maintained.
- Monitor regulatory changes and emerging risks affecting the organization.
About You
- CPA designation required.
- 8 years of progressive finance and accounting experience, including leadership responsibilities.
- Previous experience within a non-profit, charitable, healthcare, social services, education, or broader public-sector environment.
- Strong understanding of provincial and municipal funding models, grant reporting requirements, and contribution agreements.
- Experience managing audits, financial statements, budgets, and compliance reporting.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and develop teams in a collaborative environment.
- Exposure to IT oversight, technology vendors, or operational systems management.
- Strong knowledge of internal controls, risk management, and governance practices.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, including experience presenting to Boards and senior leadership.
- Advanced proficiency with ERP/accounting systems and Microsoft Excel.
