Our client is undergoing a large-scale technology transformation, including replacing approximately 85% of its systems within the next 12 months. During this transition, there is an urgent need for experienced technical resources to maintain and support legacy iSeries (RPG-based) applications in a “containment” mode while the internal team focuses on the transformation initiative (“Mayfly”).

The role is structured as a fractional, managed-service engagement with a flexible monthly hour allocation and a 12-month expected duration.

Core Responsibilities
  • Provide operational support for legacy iSeries (RPG) applications to ensure business continuity.
  • Monitor system health, logs, and batch jobs to ensure stable daily operations.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to EDI integrations and wholesale dealer processes.
  • Support and maintain data exports from iSeries systems for migration to NetSuite.
  • Execute limited, controlled code changes when necessary, primarily for fixes or minor enhancements.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders during sprint cycles to implement required updates.
  • Participate selectively in team stand-ups and planning activities.

Primary Skills
  • Strong experience with RPG on iSeries/AS400 environments.
  • Ability to work with legacy systems that are not modular or modernized.
  • Secondary Skills (Nice to Have / Partial Coverage Needed):
  • .NET / C# development experience.
  • Some exposure to Java or integration layers supporting iSeries (e.g., EDI pipelines).

AI & Tooling Expectations
  • Familiarity with AI-assisted development tools to accelerate troubleshooting and code analysis.
  • Ability to generate, validate, and document proposed code changes prior to execution.

Engagement Structure
  • Managed service model with 1–2 dedicated resources (RPG optional .NET).
  • Monthly committed hours with flexibility in allocation across skill sets.
  • Resources act as consistent points of contact for continuity.
  • Code changes follow a structured review process before implementation.
  • Preferred Background
  • Experience in retail or similar transaction-heavy environments.
  • Exposure to inventory, order management, or payment processing systems.
  • Domain familiarity with distribution or manufacturing is acceptable if retail experience is limited.

Key Constraints & Environment
  • Legacy systems are being sunset within ~12 months; focus is stability, not modernization.
  • Minimal ongoing feature development; primarily maintenance and issue resolution.
  • High urgency due to resource attrition (loss of key RPG personnel).
  • Knowledge transfer opportunity exists prior to July 10 for RPG systems.
