Position Overview
The Director of Indirect Tax will oversee all aspects of indirect taxation across the United States, including sales and use tax, property tax, and unclaimed property. Reporting to the Head of Tax, this individual will lead a team of 3–4 professionals and partner closely with business leaders, external advisors, and outsourced BPO providers to ensure compliance, mitigate risk, and drive continuous process improvement.
This is a hands-on leadership role requiring a balance of strategic oversight and operational execution, ideal for a seasoned indirect tax leader seeking to make a significant impact in a growth-oriented environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage the Indirect Tax function, including a team of 3–4 professionals and third-party service providers.
- Oversee all U.S. sales and use tax, property tax, and unclaimed property compliance and reporting.
- Develop and implement robust internal controls and risk mitigation strategies related to indirect tax matters.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for indirect tax audits and examinations, ensuring timely and effective resolution.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with Accounting, Finance, Treasury, Legal, and Operations teams to ensure tax compliance and accuracy.
- Partner with technology and process improvement teams to streamline indirect tax processes and reporting systems.
- Mentor, coach, and develop staff, fostering a culture of excellence and continuous learning.
- Conduct technical research and stay current on evolving tax legislation and regulations impacting the business.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required; CPA designation preferred.
- 7–10 years of progressive experience in indirect tax, with demonstrated leadership at a Senior Manager or Director level.
- Experience within captive automotive finance or auto leasing companies is required.
- Deep technical expertise in sales & use tax, property tax, and unclaimed property.
- Proven experience leading and developing teams and managing outsourced compliance providers.
- Strong analytical, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
- Demonstrated success driving process improvements, system enhancements, and operational efficiencies.
- Track record of career progression and stability within tax leadership roles.
