Assistant Director – Facilities Operations (Janitorial & Grounds)
Queens, NY • Full-Time • Onsite
Salary: $120–125K
Our client, a building services company, is seeking an Assistant Director of Facilities Operations to oversee both the Janitorial Services and Grounds Maintenance functions for a large university campus in Queens. This leader will manage multiple union teams, coordinate daily service delivery, support campus events, and maintain the high standards expected in a higher education environment. The role supervises Building Managers, Night Operations Managers, and the Grounds Supervisor, and reports directly to the Director of Operations.
Key Responsibilities
• Oversee daily operations for janitorial and grounds departments across a large university campus
• Supervise Building Managers, Night Operations Managers, and Grounds leadership
• Manage staffing, scheduling, performance, and training for unionized teams
• Execute cleaning protocols, landscaping programs, seasonal campus needs, and event support
• Ensure quality control and timely delivery of facility projects
• Serve as a daily client-facing point of contact for university stakeholders
• Provide operational updates, reports, and issue resolution
• Support budgeting, procurement, and inventory management
• Ensure OSHA compliance and adherence to safety standards
• Maintain documentation of inspections, evaluations, and corrective actions
• Participate in long-term planning and facilities/grounds development
• Walk and inspect the campus daily; respond to urgent operational needs
• Foster a cohesive, accountable team culture and drive continuous improvement
Required Qualifications
• Minimum 7 years of facilities contract management experience
• Minimum 7 years working in a college or university facilities environment
• Experience managing unionized teams
• Strong knowledge of custodial operations, grounds maintenance, and safety practices
• Excellent communication, organization, and leadership skills
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office; CMMS/work order systems knowledge a plus
• Fully onsite Monday–Friday, 8am–5pm, with occasional off-hours
• Ability to travel to an additional NYC campus as needed
