Role: Director, Wholesale Accounting
Salary: $160,000 - $175,000/annually
Location: New York City – Hybrid (4 days a week onsite)
About the role: A consumer-focused organization with a large wholesale operation is seeking a senior accounting leader to oversee financial reporting and accounting activities tied to its wholesale business. This role will be responsible for maintaining strong accounting discipline across key areas while supporting evolving operational needs and cross?functional initiatives.
The Director will be accountable for the accuracy and reliability of financial data related to wholesale activity, ensuring compliance with applicable accounting standards and internal guidelines. This position requires close collaboration with finance partners, operational teams, and technology stakeholders, as well as the ability to guide a team through complex accounting topics and ongoing process improvements. Success in this role depends on strong technical judgment, clear communication, and the ability to balance execution with leadership in a fast-moving environment.
Responsibilities:
- Direct assigned close activities and ensure timely completion of internal reporting deliverables
- Review reconciliations, analyses, and variance explanations to ensure completeness and accuracy
- Oversee accounting treatment for inventory, reserves, deductions, and margin-related activity
- Support financing, audit, and compliance requirements by coordinating reporting and responding to requests
- Maintain and update accounting policies and standard procedures relevant to wholesale operations
- Contribute to systems enhancements, automation efforts, and broader finance initiatives
- Build strong working relationships across departments and serve as a trusted accounting partner
- Ensure reliable financial results by overseeing period-end processes, balance sheet integrity, and core ledger activities tied to wholesale operations
- Serve as a subject matter leader for complex accounting topics, including inventory-related estimates, cost allocations, customer programs, and revenue-related judgments
- Continuously improve accounting workflows, controls, and documentation to support compliance and efficiency
- Act as a key partner to finance, operations, and systems teams to align financial practices with business activity
- Lead, coach, and develop accounting professionals, promoting a culture of accountability and continuous learning
Experience & Background
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance; CPA strongly preferred
- Extensive progressive experience in accounting, including leadership responsibility
- Solid grasp of U.S. GAAP and hands-on experience applying standards in operational settings
- Prior experience supporting wholesale or distribution-based businesses within consumer or industrial sectors
- Comfort operating in dynamic environments with multiple priorities and tight timelines
- Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and ability to communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders
- Experience driving change through process enhancement or system implementation initiatives
- Team-oriented leader with a track record of mentoring and developing talent
- Proactive problem-solver who challenges existing approaches and seeks better outcomes
- High level of integrity, ownership, and accountability
- Collaborative, adaptable, and able to influence across functions
