Role Summary
Role Summary
We are seeking a Staff Accountant to join a mission-driven nonprofit organization within the Finance, Data, and Technology team. This role is ideal for a proactive problem solver who will support senior finance leadership while taking ownership of maintaining accurate financial operations, grant tracking, and compliance in a nonprofit setting.
In this agile environment, the role extends beyond core accounting duties. The Staff Accountant will leverage a diverse skill set, contribute to cross-functional initiatives, and play a key role in advancing the organization’s mission.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Operations & Compliance
- Accounts Payable & Receivable Management: Oversee the full lifecycle of AP/AR, including vendor onboarding, invoice processing, payment execution, invoice generation, and tracking incoming funds such as grants and donations.
- Tax & Regulatory Compliance: Manage filings, registrations, and compliance requirements across multiple legal entities in a nonprofit context.
- General Ledger Management: Record and categorize transactions, prepare journal entries, reconcile accounts, and maintain fixed assets in accordance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards.
- Data Validation: Ensure the accuracy and integrity of financial and operational data across reporting tools and dashboards.
- Expense Management: Record, itemize, and properly code expenses within the general ledger.
- Budget Oversight: Assist in preparing monthly Budget vs. Actual (BvA) reports and provide insights to support departmental budget management.
Grants, Restricted Funds & In-Kind Contributions
- Restricted Funds Management: Maintain and reconcile restricted funds to ensure compliance with donor intent and nonprofit fund accounting requirements.
- In-Kind Contributions: Track, record, and issue receipts for in-kind donations in accordance with nonprofit reporting standards.
- Financial Analysis: Prepare financial analyses and reports to support grant utilization, program effectiveness, and overall financial health.
Month-End Close & Audit
- Month-End Close: Perform monthly close processes, including account reconciliations, bank reconciliations, and variance analysis.
- Audit Support: Lead preparation for annual external audits, ensuring readiness of financial records and acting as a liaison with auditors.
- Standard Operating Procedures: Develop and refine accounting SOPs to strengthen internal controls and support organizational growth.
- Reporting: Generate financial reports in compliance with GAAP and nonprofit reporting requirements.
Qualifications
- Experience: Minimum of 2 years of accounting experience, including AP/AR and financial reporting.
- Nonprofit Experience: Prior experience in nonprofit accounting and grant management is preferred.
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks), Google Workspace, and Microsoft Office.
- Interpersonal Skills: Strong collaboration and relationship management skills, with the ability to work across teams and with external partners.
