Accounting Manager
Our client, an established construction & architectural services company, is seeking an Accounting Manager to lead and strengthen its internal accounting operations.
Location:
This role is hybrid in San Francisco. On-site attendance is expected approximately 3 to 4 days per week during the initial onboarding period, transitioning to approximately 2 to 3 days per week once established.
Job Description:
This hands-on role will oversee the full accounting cycle, improve the month-end close, and partner with operational leaders to ensure accurate project and financial reporting. The ideal candidate brings construction accounting experience, understands how billing, payroll, job costing, and work-in-progress (WIP) reporting connect, and is motivated to improve processes within a growing organization.
Responsibilities:
- Lead the monthly close process and improve the timeliness, accuracy, and consistency of financial reporting
- Oversee general ledger accounting, journal entries, balance sheet reconciliations, accruals, and supporting schedules
- Manage construction accounting activities, including project billing, job costing, work-in-progress reporting, and project-level financial analysis
- Ensure accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and cash activity are accurately recorded and integrated into the close
- Partner with project managers and operational leaders to review project performance, investigate variances, and resolve accounting issues
- Prepare financial reports and provide clear insights into project costs, profitability, cash flow, and overall business performance
- Coordinate with external accounting, payroll, tax, and audit providers while bringing greater ownership of accounting activities in-house
- Develop and improve accounting policies, internal controls, documentation, and scalable workflows
- Evaluate opportunities to use technology and automation to improve accounting efficiency and reporting quality
- Supervise and develop an accounting team member while remaining actively involved in day-to-day execution
Requirements:
- Progressive accounting experience with significant responsibility for the full-cycle month-end close
- Construction or project-based accounting experience, including job costing, work-in-progress (WIP) reporting, and project billing
- Strong knowledge of general ledger accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, reconciliations, and financial reporting
- Demonstrated ability to improve accounting processes, shorten close timelines, and strengthen internal controls
- Hands-on leadership and business-partnering skills, with the ability to work effectively with accounting staff, project managers, and senior leadership
