Job Summary:
The Staff Accountant with Grant Accounting Experience is responsible for the accurate and timely management of grant-related financial activities. This role ensures compliance with all federal, state, and local guidelines while supporting the organization’s mission. The ideal candidate will handle general accounting duties as well as specialized grant management, including budgeting, reporting, and auditing.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Grant Accounting & Compliance:

    • Manage and maintain financial records for all grant-funded programs.
    • Ensure compliance with grant requirements and applicable regulations, including OMB Uniform Guidance (2 CFR Part 200).
    • Prepare and submit accurate financial reports to funding agencies according to grant agreements.
    • Review and track grant expenditures to ensure alignment with approved budgets.
    • Assist in preparing grant proposals and budgets, ensuring all cost components are accurately reflected.
  2. General Accounting:

    • Assist with general ledger reconciliations, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and month-end close processes.
    • Maintain accurate financial records, including journal entries, adjusting entries, and accruals.
    • Support the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
    • Ensure proper classification of all revenue, expenses, and grant allocations.
    • Perform variance analysis and resolve discrepancies as needed.
  3. Budgeting and Forecasting:

    • Assist in the development of organizational and grant-specific budgets.
    • Monitor budget performance and report variances to management.
    • Collaborate with program managers to ensure effective and efficient use of grant resources.
  4. Audit and Reporting:

    • Assist in preparation for internal and external audits, including grant audits.
    • Ensure proper documentation and support for all grant-related transactions.
    • Support audit inquiries and work with auditors to resolve any issues.
  5. Other Duties:

    • Stay current with changes in grant management and accounting standards.
    • Participate in special projects and process improvements as needed.
    • Provide support to other accounting team members and departments as required.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 2-3 years of accounting experience, with at least 1 year focused on grant accounting.
  • Strong knowledge of grant management, fund accounting, and OMB Uniform Guidance.
  • Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Sage, etc.) and Microsoft Excel.
  • Excellent attention to detail, time management, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with both financial and non-financial personnel.
  • Strong analytical skills and problem-solving abilities.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or progress toward certification.
  • Experience with nonprofit accounting and reporting.
  • Familiarity with federal and state grant regulations and reporting requirements.
