Position: Controller

Client Overview: Our client, a premier gourmet grocery store, is seeking a proactive and detail-oriented Controller who thrives in a dynamic retail environment. This role will serve as a strategic business partner, managing and enhancing an already successful operation.

Key Responsibilities:

Operational Management:

  • Ensure the accuracy of all General Ledger financial accounting and perform associated account reconciliations.
  • Oversee the timely and efficient monthly accounting close process, including a thorough review of journal entries and operating results.
  • Lead the annual financial statement audit process, preparing all necessary documentation.
  • Identify and implement process enhancements to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of accounting functions.
  • Optimize the use of relevant software within the accounting department and ensure seamless integration into processes.
  • Prepare year-to-date cash flow analyses and projections to effectively manage cash balances.
  • Supervise accounts payable operations, ensuring accuracy in vendor statements and payments.
  • Oversee IT department activities, ensuring all IT requirements are met.
  • Perform additional duties as needed.

Financial Reporting:

  • Develop and enhance financial reporting platforms, ensuring all related reporting requirements are met.
  • Assist in the preparation and completion of the annual budget and update forecasts to provide accurate projections of financial performance.
  • Prepare comprehensive monthly, quarterly, and annual financial management reports, including variance analysis.
  • Undertake ad-hoc reporting and analysis as assigned.

Culture and Development:

  • Foster relationships with colleagues, becoming a trusted leader in finance and accounting matters.
  • Coach and guide staff to ensure fair treatment and compliance with financial practices.
  • Mediate employee relations and performance issues, providing counsel on effective performance management.
  • Serve as a role model for the company’s core values, demonstrating consistent leadership across the organization.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance; a Master’s degree is a plus.
  • CPA certification preferred.
  • At least seven years of progressively responsible accounting experience, including four years in a managerial role.
  • Proven track record in building strong relationships with diverse stakeholders.
  • Passionate about the company’s mission and dedicated to overcoming organizational challenges.

Compensation and Work Environment:

  • Salary: $140,000 - $180,000 per year.
  • Work Schedule: 5 days on-site in the East Side of NYC.
