Our client is a leading fabricator of custom industrial solutions, specializing in systems for wood product manufacturers (e.g., cabinet, furniture, and lumber businesses). Their expertise lies in designing, fabricating, and installing pneumatic conveying systems to handle a range of materials—from raw materials like plastic resin and unpackaged food to waste materials like sawdust.

With a line of proprietary line of blowers, valves, and separators, along with fabricated pipes, fittings, and stanchions, are integral to most projects. Projects typically range up to $1,000,000 and involve three stages: configuration, fabrication, and installation—each taking about a month.

Position Summary:
The Shop Manager is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the fabrication shop. This includes managing welders and fabricators, requisitioning materials based on job drawings, assigning tasks, ensuring high welding and painting quality standards, and maintaining the facility. Additionally, the Shop Manager will coordinate with corporate resources on safety measures and recommend capital and process improvements.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Team Management:

    • Supervise, mentor, and lead a team of welders and fabricators of various skill levels.
    • Assign work based on job requirements and ensure efficient workflow.
  2. Project Oversight:

    • Review job drawings and requisition necessary materials to complete fabrication jobs.
    • Ensure adherence to project timelines, quality standards, and client specifications.
    • Manage welding and painting processes to meet company and industry standards.
  3. Facility & Process Maintenance:

    • Oversee building and grounds maintenance, as well as process upkeep.
    • Propose improvements to equipment and processes to enhance productivity and quality.
  4. Quality Assurance:

    • Implement and maintain quality control protocols for MIG welding (primarily on steel plate 3/16” or less, with some galvanized and structural steel).
    • Conduct inspections and enforce corrective actions as needed.
  5. Safety & Compliance:

    • Coordinate with corporate safety resources to ensure shop safety compliance.
    • Conduct regular safety meetings and implement best practices in line with safety standards.
  6. Capital Recommendations:

    • Recommend capital investments and process changes to optimize shop operations and improve efficiency.

Qualifications:

  • Proven experience in managing a fabrication shop or industrial manufacturing environment.
  • Strong knowledge of MIG welding techniques and steel fabrication, particularly with steel plate 3/16” or less.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings.
  • Familiarity with fabrication processes, including handling galvanized and structural steel.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills.
  • Knowledge of facility and process maintenance best practices.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience in a shop environment with repetitive, straightforward work processes.
  • Familiarity with capital project planning and implementation.
  • Basic knowledge of pneumatics and pneumatic conveying systems is a plus.

Work Environment:

  • Primarily indoor fabrication shop setting.
  • Standard first shift M-F, with 100 hours of mandatory overtime per year.
