Our client is seeking an experienced Controller to lead the financial operations of a growing insurance organization. This role is responsible for ensuring the accurate and timely reporting of financial statements in accordance with GAAP and statutory accounting standards, as well as overseeing treasury functions and internal controls. The Controller will manage the full accounting cycle, including audits, monthly and annual close processes, regulatory reporting, and cash flow management. Key areas of oversight include investment accounting, reinsurance accounting, accounts payable, billing, premium accounting, and cash management. This position also entails financial oversight for multiple insurance entities and associated legal entities.
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee the preparation, analysis, and presentation of financial statements and reports.
- Lead the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes for multiple entities.
- Monitor and update financial policies and procedures, ensuring alignment with new regulations and standards.
- Ensure compliance with tax and financial reporting requirements at local, state, and federal levels.
- Maintain and enhance internal controls to safeguard assets and ensure compliance with accounting and regulatory standards.
- Supervise external audits and reviews, ensuring unqualified opinions.
- Provide financial analysis and support to executive leadership and department heads.
- Monitor capital requirements and provide insights for strategic decision-making.
- Collaborate with actuarial teams to support reserving processes and provide necessary financial data.
- Manage treasury functions, including cash flow, banking relationships, and short-term cash management.
- Ensure compliance with investment policies and monitor advisor performance.
- Manage financial systems and identify opportunities for automation and process improvements.
- Develop and mentor finance department staff, fostering a culture of professional growth.
- Drive organizational goals by establishing department objectives and operating procedures.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (Master’s preferred).
- CPA designation is required.
- 10–12 years of experience in accounting and finance, including audit coordination, reporting, and investment accounting.
- At least 5 years of supervisory experience leading finance teams.
- Extensive knowledge of GAAP, statutory accounting, and reinsurance practices within the insurance industry.
- Proficient in financial reporting systems and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Strong ability to interpret and present complex financial data to both finance and non-finance professionals.
- Knowledge of state and federal financial regulations.
- Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and organizational skills.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with a focus on teamwork and collaboration.
Preferred Skills:
- Expertise in corporate income tax compliance.
- Hands-on experience with actuarial reserving processes.
- Ability to implement system improvements and enhance automation.
- Experience in a multi-entity financial environment.
