Position Summary
As the Director of Tax, you will play a strategic and operational leadership role in building and overseeing the company's in-house tax function. This includes managing the direct tax responsibilities (compliance, research, provision), guiding the indirect tax strategy, and collaborating with external providers and cross-functional partners. You will be instrumental in optimizing tax systems and processes, evaluating and implementing tax software, and supporting Treasury operations.
 
Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and build the in-house tax department
  • Manage U.S. federal and state tax compliance, provision, research, and planning
  • Evaluate, select, and implement tax software and process improvements
  • Collaborate with internal departments (e.g., Finance, Treasury, Legal) to align tax strategy with business goals
  • Oversee indirect tax functions and third-party tax advisors
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable tax regulations and proactively identify tax-saving opportunities
  • Contribute to strategic planning and business structuring decisions with a tax lens
 
Qualifications
  • CPA designation required
  • Master’s degree in Taxation strongly preferred
  • Minimum of 9–11 years of relevant experience, including:
    • 3 years in a Big 4 public accounting firm
    • Experience in mid to large-sized corporate tax departments
  • Strong experience with U.S. federal and state tax (including compliance, provision and research)
  • Demonstrated success leading tax functions and building high-performing teams
  • Ability to work hands-on while also maintaining a strategic perspective
  • Proven history of job stability and career advancement
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Proven ability to influence across departments and drive results
  • Comfortable operating in a fast-paced, evolving environment
  • Forward-thinking leader with a process improvement mindset
  • Note - must live in the Southeast US

Determining compensation for this role (and others) at Vaco/Highspring depends upon a wide array of factors including but not limited to the individual’s skill sets, experience and training, licensure and certifications, office location and other geographic considerations, as well as other business and organizational needs. The individual may also be eligible for discretionary bonuses, and can participate in medical, dental, and vision benefits as well as the company’s 401(k) retirement plan.
