Director of Accounting
Our client, a healthcare technology company focused on revolutionizing the health insurance industry with innovative no-deductible, no-copay plans, is seeking a Director of Accounting to join their team. This position offers the opportunity to work closely with the Controller to oversee accounting for the health insurance business and ensure compliance with regulatory standards. The ideal candidate will have a strong accounting background, particularly in the healthcare or insurance sector, and will be a strong leader who is passionate about driving process improvements. This is a hybrid role, requiring in-office work four days a week with the flexibility to work from home on Fridays.
Responsibilities:
- Provide expert guidance on complex accounting issues and transactions, particularly in the insurance industry.
- Stay informed on emerging accounting standards and assess their impact on the company’s financial practices.
- Interpret and apply relevant accounting policies, including ASC 944 and IFRS 17, to insurance transactions.
- Lead the development and implementation of accounting policies and procedures for the insurance operations.
- Ensure compliance with Model Audit Rule (MAR) and manage the implementation and maintenance of systems to support MAR compliance.
- Manage the audit process, liaising with external auditors on all audit-related issues.
- Collaborate cross-functionally to resolve any MAR-related issues or concerns.
- Leverage industry knowledge to improve financial reporting and ensure compliance with industry standards.
- Stay updated on regulatory changes affecting the insurance sector and apply these changes to accounting practices.
- Utilize experience with Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) compliance to strengthen internal controls and reporting processes.
- Coordinate with internal and external auditors to complete SOX and MAR audits successfully.
- Work with finance, legal, and other departments to ensure accurate financial reporting and timely completion.
- Provide training and guidance to team members on technical accounting matters.
- Manage additional projects as assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA certification required.
- Big Four or large regional experience strongly preferred.
- Technical accounting and research experience, with insurance industry experience considered a plus.
- In-depth knowledge of US GAAP and experience with complex accounting issues.
- Familiarity with Model Audit Rule (MAR) and Sarbanes-Oxley compliance.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and leadership skills.
- Highly organized with the ability to thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
Compensation:
Determining compensation for this role (and others) at Vaco depends upon a wide array of factors including but not limited to the individual’s skill sets, experience and training, licensure and certifications, office location and other geographic considerations, as well as other business and organizational needs. With that said, as required by local law, Vaco believes that the following salary range reasonably estimates the base compensation for an individual hired into this position in geographies that require salary range disclosure: $150K - $180K per year.
